The point of entry in the paintings of Erik de Bree is often the image of a landscape.  In the earlier paintings he exposed in the VERVERS gallery in 2008, the image of the landscape was part of a sequens.  In his new work it is not the narrative element he is looking for. His interest lays in the deformation of the image in order to create a whole new tension field.  There is the way of ‘ripping up’ a painting. Removing so much from the initial image that it doesn’t refer to the starting point anymore. It has become an abstraction of itself. So much of the painting has been ripped away that the ‘negative’ space has taken over the canvas and maybe has become the ‘positive’ space. The order and plan behind colour and form is gone, but a new balance has been brought forward.

" I guess that at this moment I am interested in distorting imagery. To construct, deconstruct and reconstruct, to expose and conceal, but the image is always at the center of my interest. The image is the starting point." (text @ A. Ververs)

Het landschap als afbeelding van de culturele mens en als onderdeel in een sequentie van andere beelden. In het werk van Erik de Bree ´Return to mount Shasta´ is de aanwezigheid van de camera een actief onderdeel van het schilderij.Op het doek zelf is een kader met ronde hoeken aangebracht waardoor de afbeelding valt te lezen als een foto zoals die in de jaren zestig werd afgedrukt. Het woord ´return´ verwijst dan ook naar de herbeleving van een moment of een landschap wat door herinnering kan worden opgeroepen.In ´For when you´re lost we´ll find you there´ refereert het kader aan de schermindeling van de tv of het bioscoopscherm. De beweeglijkheid van het geschilderde versterkt dit uitgangspunt. Met de inbreng van de camera wordt de ´echtheid´ van de afgebeelde natuur in twijfel getrokken of verwordt het beeld tot een tijdelijke illusie. (tekst @ A. Ververs)
